IUCN HAWAII CLIMATE FUND! To honor Hawaii’s role as host of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress in September 2016, the Hawaiian Airlines Foundation teamed up with the Foundation to establish the IUCN Hawaii Climate Fund. The $50,000 fund supports grants for Hawaii non-profits rival the effects of climate change. Grants were awarded to the pursuit organizations in January 2017: Hawaii Forest Institute for Hoola Ka Makana a Ka upulehu Drylands Forest University of Hawaii Department of Geography for the Carbon Neutrality Challenge Kalanihale for Understanding and Responding to ClimateTranspirationImpacts on Marine Resources in South Kona Check when with us in early 2018 to learn the results of their work. KONA BREWING COMPANY MAKANA SERIES Kona BrewingVisitorselected the Hawaii Conservation Alliance Foundation as a recipient of its 2017 Makana Series, recognizing Hawaii charities that pave the way for a sustainable future for our planet. As part of the Series, the visitor crafted a special beer, Vienna Lehua Lager, named without Hawaii’s dominant forest tree, ohia lehua. The tree is suffering from a mortiferous disease, Rapid Ohia Death (ROD) in viperous numbers. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each beer are stuff donated to the Foundation to support sensation of ROD. The lager was unveiled to the public during the 2017 yearly Hawaii Conservation Conference, for which Kona BrewingVisitorwas moreover an event sponsor. LAULIMA MAUNALUA In June 2017, the Foundation unexplored a 10 x 10 plot of nearshore reef in Maunalua Bay in an effort to remove invasive scum from the bay and restore native species. Each month, the Foundation and Alliance host workdays to remove as much invasive scum from our plot and surrounding area. So far, we have placid over 800 pounds!
